We're answering your number one question: How much does a bathroom remodel cost? Below I have divided up the four types of bathroom remodeling for you and have linked helpful resources.
Please note that these are starting points and not quotes. Each home is unique, as are the reasons behind your home remodeling. But it's possible to gauge a starting point, and that's what we have done for you. Combined with our experience and some local research, we're confident in the numbers we have listed.
I've included the following types of bathroom remodeling costs:
Cosmetic Refresh
Full Remodel, Main Bath
Full Remodel, En-Suite
Bathroom Addition
COSMETIC REFRESH
Starting at $9,000
I love a cosmetically refreshed bathroom. If you're not having plumbing issues, sprucing up instead of demoing your bathroom can save you exponentially while dramatically changing your space.
I consider the elements of a bathroom refresh to include: a new furniture-style vanity, a new faucet, new flooring, a new toilet, mirror, lighting, towel bar set, and a fresh coat of paint. A $9,000 budget is a good starting point and will cover all of the listed items in most refresh cases.
To stay on the lower end of the investment range, we recommend choosing a furniture-style vanity from Home Depot and using Lifeproof Luxury Vinyl Plank flooring. A furniture-style vanity comes with an attached engineered stone countertop (saving $2,000+), a sink (saving hundreds), and cabinet hardware (saving $100+). LVP flooring is simple to install (saving $1,000+), can float on top of your existing floor (again, minimal prep and demo), and is virtually indestructible while looking like pretty hardwood.
You've probably noticed that I left the tub/shower area out. I did this because tile and walls are expensive. Even just updating the grout can be more than you might think. It's meticulous work, and even going with a "simple" fiberglass bathroom surround can reveal what's been going on behind your walls … and you're just refreshing anyway. Give your tub/shower a good scrub, replace the caulk along the edges, and close a pretty shower curtain along your new curtain rod. Refreshing.
FULL REMODEL, MAIN BATH
Starting at $20,000
The most common space to be remodeled is your main bathroom. Everyone uses it, and you want to ensure it remains hygienic.
This type of bathroom remodel will include new everything, typically some electrical and plumbing, and some drywall patching and painting. This base price is based on a furniture-style vanity, mirrors, lighting, toilet, and fiberglass tub/shower surround or basic glass enclosure shower. We also formed our Bathroom Cost Comparison Guide from two similar bathrooms in this range.
If you're looking to stay on the lower end, our top two tips for saving money are keeping your layout the same and understanding the labor involved for different materials.
I'm not anti-layout changes. I'm a big fan of responsibly changing a space to work for you. But, I do want to bring attention to the fact that layout changes are expensive, usually more than homeowners have guessed. This is because they involve more permitting and trades.
Materials matter and can make a big difference in price. Take tile, for instance. I LOVE tile. LOVE it. But it's the more expensive option. Tile can range from affordable to the skies-the-limit in pricing (so know your square foot budget), but the kicker is that it's time-consuming to install.
Another point worth mentioning is that the lower-priced material options aren't always a good choice. A lower price tag can appear cheaper but cost you more in the end.
Take, for instance, flooring. A lower sticker price on flooring might mean it doesn't include a backing. That means an additional purchase and more labor time to lay a separate backing down before installing the flooring; therefore, actually costing you more than flooring with a little higher sticker price that already includes a backing.
FULL REMODEL, EN-SUITE
Starting at $50,000
En-suites are fun!
This bathroom is attached to the homeowner's bedroom and is where homeowners like to apply more personal touches. Custom showers, free-standing tubs, custom double vanities, and private toilet rooms, all in a smart layout, are common in an en-suite.
The square footage of this type of bathroom can be nearly double that of a main bath, and homeowners are more comfortable using higher-quality materials in a place without high traffic flow.
I'm one who highly values the space I begin and end my days. An en-suite is not a space everyone has, but for those who do, building this room to meet your needs is a very worthwhile investment into you and your home's value.
BATHROOM ADDITION
Starting at $50,000
Creating a bathroom where one did not previously exist is exciting! You're building your home to meet your family's needs, and that feels great.
This starting price point applies to a bathroom built in an ideal place in your home. This project requires multiple trips from plumbers, electricians, HVAC technicians, and inspectors that will be scheduled throughout the building process. We ensure we do our best to time everything out efficiently and cost-effectively.
It's neat to watch the walls form and the room come together. And this type of "remodel" doesn't cause a disruption in your lives the way remodeling an existing space does, which is a big plus!
FINAL TIPS
Just like vehicle pricing, remodeling pricing is a unique process. Some homes have been meticulously and properly cared for, while others have not. You don't always know the work a previous homeowner did on your home before you owned it. And it's wise to approach a home remodel with a contingency for finding something that needs repairing.
However, learning a solid starting point for bathroom remodeling in the Coeur D'Alene, ID - Spokane, WA area is possible to gauge, and that's what we did. We not only took our own experience and pricing methods, but we researched local data. (This link will take you to a 2023 remodeling cost report website for the Spokane area.) So, you can be assured that our pricing aligns with what is to be expected.
Fair, honest, clearly laid out pricing.
