Autumn has a way of reminding us that the house needs a little tending before winter settles in.

 

Clearing gutters, protecting outdoor plumbing, checking the furnace, sealing drafts, and taking care of a few often-forgotten safety items can help prevent damage, improve energy efficiency, and keep your home more comfortable through the colder months.

 

None of these tasks is especially glamorous, but completing them now can spare you from discovering a frozen faucet, smoky fireplace, or struggling furnace on the sort of January morning when you would much rather remain inside with a warm cup of coffee.
